First disbelief, anger then the beginnings of reflection.
A few days ago, Eusebio Unzue, the historic manager of the Movistar team, wanted to shake up the cycling environment which he believes is not evolving enough and observes the same rules.
Laudable in substance, Unzue's reflection nevertheless had the finesse of an anvil and the delicacy of a bulldozer.
In particular, he proposes to replace a rider in the event of abandonment during one of the three major Tours (France, Italy, Spain).
“In 2023, we lose our leader Enric Mas from the first day in a fall,” he explains.
Why not allow him to be replaced, at least for the first week, and continue with eight riders?
In football, for a long time, substitutions were prohibited.
»
He continues: “Today, if a runner falls, he sometimes has to suffer like an animal to reach the finish and have the right to start again the next day.
Why not allow him to get in a car or ambulance to get checked out and leave the next day if nothing is broken?
» Last shocking proposal, Unzue also proposes to shorten the duration of the Grand Tours from three to two weeks.
“This would allow the best to participate in all three and be competitive.
It would help the show.
