A long solo escape was unsuccessful: Marc Hirschi was caught shortly before the finish. Then the top favorites sprinted for victory. Primoz Roglic was too slow to win, but fast enough to take the lead.

The Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE) won the second Pyrenees stage of the Tour de France.

After 153 kilometers from Pau to Laruns, the 21-year-old sprinted to victory from a group of five.

Primoz Roglic (Team-Jumbo-Visma) took over the yellow jersey of the overall leader because Adam Yates, who had been in the lead until then, could not follow the leading group.

Roglic is now 21 seconds ahead of second-placed Egan Bernal (Team Ineos).

At the beginning of the stage in Pau there were many attacks from the field.

Some drivers wanted to be in a breakaway group, but none of them got away at first.

It wasn't until the Col de Hourcère, a first category mountain, that the peloton tore apart.

The Swiss Marc Hirschi (Team Sunweb) escaped a group of pursuers around the German driver Lennard Kämna (Bora-hansgrohe) and in the meantime had a lead of four minutes on the large field.

Team Jumbo-Visma led the group of favorites in the overall classification.

Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-hansgrohe) could not keep up the pace on the last climb and let go.

Roglic, last year's winner Bernal, Pogacar and Mikel Landa (Bahrain-McLaren) pulled out in front.

Roglic secured five bonus seconds because he reached the summit of Col de Marie Blanque in second.

In the descent, Hirschi extended his lead.

Only when it flattened out again did the group around Roglic catch up.

The five drivers went together for the last kilometer, in the final sprint Pogacar prevailed.
