There was one important personality for the guests in advance: FC Augsburg had to compete in Wolfsburg without Heiko Herrlich.

The 48-year-old head coach had to go to inpatient treatment during the week due to health problems.

According to the club, he was better on Sunday.

But the game was accompanied by his assistant coach.

Supervised by the actual assistant Iraklis Metaxas, FC Augsburg missed the leap to the top of the table at VfL Wolfsburg.

After two wins at the start of the season, the team had to be satisfied with a 0-0 this time, but in view of the way the game went, they were lucky with one point.

4632 spectators saw the game in the stadium.

The game turned out to be completely open in the first half.

Wolfsburg took the initiative more often, while Augsburg relied on a well-stocked defense and counterattack.

Opportunities arose from Florian Niederlechner (10th minute, 21st, 30th) and Michael Gregoritsch (11th) on the one hand and Wout Weghorst (7th) and Paulo Otavio (37th) on the other.

VfL missed the best opportunity when Josip Brekalo hit the goal from 17 meters between several Augsburg defenders after a surrender by Maximilian Arnold - but the hit was withdrawn due to offside.

The break went goalless.

In the second half the game turned out to be far less balanced.

Wolfsburg now clearly dominated the action, but found it difficult to play out serious opportunities in the now lower Augsburg defense.

There was a lack of speed and ideas to get the decisive goal.

On the Augsburg side, only Alfred Finnbogason (81st) tried again in the closing stages to get in front of the opposing goal - in vain.

Even five minutes of stoppage time didn't change the result.

Wolfsburg is still waiting for its first win after the third matchday.

Augsburg is in surprisingly good shape despite the point loss - the Swabians are in second place behind leaders RB Leipzig.
