Bavaria's victory in Rome: the game of unanswered questions

In the Bundesliga, FC Bayern has rarely convinced recently. In the first knockout round of the premier class at Lazio Rome there was a runaway victory. Where is the defending champion now?

Are Bayern overplayed, tired or both?

Lots of trips, lots of games, lots of cancellations, but maybe also less quality in terms of breadth than in the perfect past season?

How good are Bayern right now?

In the league they last played 3: 3 (0: 2) at home against Bielefeld and lost 1: 2 (0: 2) in Frankfurt.

Even in the 1-0 (1-0) at Hertha BSC, the record champions did not convince for long periods.

If you leave out the Qatar trip, the last convincing appearance was the 4: 1 (2: 1) against Hoffenheim at the end of January.

You can ask about the condition of the team.

The game in Rome could not offer any answers.

Lazio was too weak for long stretches.

Just forget the evening?

Mateo Musacchio would like that, which brings us to the scene of the game.

The Lazio defender played a far too short back pass to goalkeeper Pepe Reina after less than nine minutes.

Robert Lewandowski was the beneficiary and put his team in the lead.

After that, Lazio did not find a defensive order.

Bayern played well, but Rome doesn't make it particularly difficult for them either.

Musacchio was changed after 30 minutes.

It didn't look like he was hurt.

The result:

Bayern Munich wins 4-1 (3-0) at Lazio in Rome and has good prospects of making it into the quarter-finals of the Champions League before the second leg on March 17th.

Here you can find the message about the game.

First half:

After conceding the goal, Lazio had to shake briefly, but then the Romans created opportunities, but failed to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer or his front men.

Bayern did better, Jamal Musiala (24th) and Leroy Sané (42nd) increased for the defending champion.

Bayern was lucky that Lazio did not get a penalty in the 18th minute.

Musiala soon for the DFB?

With his goal to make it 2-0, Musiala became the youngest German goalscorer in Champions League history at the age of 17 and 363 days, replacing Sammy Kuffour.

In the next few days he will most likely sign a new contract with Bayern.

And which national team the Stuttgart-born midfielder will play for in the future will soon be decided.

He should tend not to run for England, but for the DFB.

Is Bavaria's bank enough?

Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, Lucas Hernández, Bouna Sarr, Javi Martínez, Marc Roca and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

There weren't more players on the Bayern bench today, although there was still room for six more.

Actually too little quantity and perhaps also quality for the premier class.

In Rome that didn't become a problem.

Who is the better striker?

Lewandowski became a world footballer last year, but the Pole had to hand over the golden shoe for most goals scored to Ciro Immobile.

With 36 goals, the Italian had two more than Lewandowski.

That evening, however, Bayern had to think twice about a real duel between the goal scorers.

And Immobile would probably have seized an opportunity like the one Lewandowski transformed.

Second half

: Not even a minute was played when Francesco Acerbi fabricated an own goal.

Shortly thereafter, Joaquín Correa reduced to 1: 4 (49th).

Four minutes later, Neuer saved strongly against Correa.

Had the ball been in, there might still have been reliable answers to some of the questions about the current state of Bayern.

But he wasn't.

Qatar is okay, shopping is not?

Four Bayern professionals have tested positive for the corona virus within the past three weeks.

At Sky, Hasan Salihamidžić was asked before the game whether it was true that the players were only allowed to be at home or with the team and not even go shopping.

The Bavarian sports board said: “We have actually tightened the measures.

We have agreed a dedicated test protocol.

There are double tests, PCR and antigen tests and of course we try to limit contacts. "

A little consolation?

Things are looking bad with the quarter-finals.

But at least Lazio did better than Roma when they met Bayern in the Stadio Olimpico.

In October 2014, FCB won 7-1 against city rivals AS Roma.

At least it didn't get that bad for Lazio.
