Not only Corona* characterizes Olympia 2022, the two-week sports event is also politically charged.
The USA*, Great Britain* and several other countries had announced that they would not send diplomatic representatives to Beijing.
The background is human rights violations that the western states accuse the Chinese government of.
But China doesn't want to spoil the opening ceremony in Beijing.

The ceremony, which officially marks the start of the Olympic Games, will take place on February 04, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. local time (1:00 p.m. CET).
Director is Zhang Yimou, who was already responsible for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.
The venue is once again the National Stadium in Beijing, also known as the "Bird's Nest" due to its appearance.

The beginning of the Chinese Spring, which falls on the day of the opening, should be the focus of the opening ceremony.
About 3000 protagonists will be part of the show.
Due to Corona, this is far less than at the opening ceremony in 2008. The show is also limited to 100 minutes.
Arguably the most important part of the ceremony is the lighting of the Olympic flame towards the end of the event.

Due to the corona pandemic, only local fans should initially be able to get tickets.
However, in mid-January it was decided that only selected guests would be allowed to watch the games live on site.
The Olympic opening ceremony is also affected by this measure.
Although the opening ceremony officially marks the start of the Olympic Games, the Olympic curling tournament begins on Wednesday, two days earlier.
Ice hockey and freestyle skiing also start the day before.
