The bronze medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, Avishag Samberg, today (Sunday) won the silver medal at the World Cup in Sofia, Bulgaria.
This is the largest competition in the round, with the participation of 1000 athletes from around the world, including 17 from Israel.
The 20-year-old Samberg, who competes in the 49kg weight class, opened the competition day directly in the second round, where she had no trouble beating Clara Sandra of Argentina 1:11, and in the quarterfinals she continued with great ability and finished with 8:18 over Italian Carina Martoli.
Knowing she had secured a medal, Samberg advanced to the semifinals against Jacqueline Wenges Rodriguez Angie of Mexico, and at the end of legal time when the score on the board showed 4: 4, the fight went into a gold score, where the Israeli had the upper hand.
In the final, Adriana Serzo Iglesias, the Olympic runner-up, was waiting for her.
After the result in the first round was 0: 0, the Spaniard started to press on the gas and eventually won 19: 6, and Samberg settled for the silver medal.
Just a week ago, Samberg participated in the first World Cup of this year in Albania, but finished only in fifth place, and failed to advance to the podium for the first time since 2019, after losing already in the quarterfinals, those who now returned to the podium and also gained important points ahead of the Paris Olympics 2024
