Andrei Shevchenko was interviewed on Italian television yesterday (Sunday) and expressed his pain in tears following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The 45-year-old coach currently lives in London, but his family lives in Ukraine and chose to stay despite the war, and Shevchenko went out calling for help for his people.
"I ask you, open your heart to my people, to the women, children and the elderly who need your help so much," Shevchenko urged RAI viewers, "make them feel the way you made me feel."

The Ukrainian, who starred in Italy as a player in the Milan uniform, and until recently also coached Genoa for several months, explained: "We are asking for help in funding food and medical supplies, which are running out in Ukraine. Shevchenko thanked everyone who expressed support for his homeland, adding: "The sports world is proving to be on Ukraine's side. Much has been done, but it is important that we mobilize resources.
