World Cup 2022: Lebanon-Syria interrupted because of projectile throwing

The qualifying meeting for the World Cup between Lebanon and Syria was temporarily interrupted after projectiles were thrown,


Deplorable incidents in the stadiums took place again this Thursday afternoon.

This time they performed in the encounter between Lebanon and Syria, won 3-0 by the Syrians.

Indeed, while Syria was already largely leading in the score, several spectators began to throw bottles.

After a first warning, the facts repeated themselves a few minutes later.

The Qatari referee of the match, Abdulrahman Ibrahim Al-Jassim, interrupted the match.

Spectators at the Saida International Stadium were even evacuated.

The game resumed after more than fifteen minutes of stoppage.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Lebanese fans threw bottles on to the pitch.

The second half starts 20 minutes later.

The referee warned 🇱🇧 captain that the match might get suspended if this happened again.

This match was extremely important for Lebanon who could still hope to snatch a play-off place at the expense of the United Arab Emirates.

With this defeat, Lebanon is doomed and the Emiratis have the free way to face Australia in the Asian play-offs, which lost this morning against Japan.

The latter are already qualified for the World Cup as well as Iran, South Korea and Saudi Arabia.

For the last meeting, but without stake, Lebanon will move to Iran while Syria will receive Iraq, the two matches taking place on Tuesday.
