FC Bayern Munich deservedly lost the quarter-final first leg in Villarreal 0-1.

Team and coach are self-critical and swear by the second leg.

Villarreal - FC Bayern Munich is entering the decisive phase of the season.

In the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Villarreal (the first leg can be read in the ticker) was a supposedly feasible opponent for Julian Nagelsmann's team.

With a 1-0 defeat, the German record champions now go into the second leg next Tuesday (9:00 p.m.).

The top performers Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Müller are extremely critical of their performance, while Julian Nagelsmann pays tribute to the brave performance of the Spaniards.

We collected the votes for the game.

Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich) on ...

... the course of the game: "Especially in the first half we weren't there at all.

We were a bit more present in the second half, but that also made the game much wilder.

We risked a bit more, I would say, but we also made more mistakes, so we allowed even more.

At the end of the day we have to be honest and say that we're still in good hands with 1-0."

… about the goal conceded to make it 0-1: “We have some coordination problems in the situation: it’s not our turn with the deep ball, it’s not our turn with the ball in the backcourt.

He runs in, that's difficult to defend, because the striker always has an advantage.

But we definitely have to defend the passes before that much better.”

… on the team's weaknesses: "I don't think we played against an overpowering opponent today either, but we still made them strong.

We knew they had their qualities and they brought them onto the pitch - we couldn't show our quality at all.

The only good thing is that we have one game left and we know that.

I am quite sure that we will then show a different face.”

Thomas Müller (FC Bayern Munich) on ...

... the defeat: "Of course it's absolutely unscheduled for us, we couldn't deliver the game we wanted today.

There were different facets in this game, but we didn't have that power offensively, that many chances we created.

Of course we started the second half with a bit more anger in our stomachs, but then it got a bit wild.

I would say this 1-0, we actually take that with us now.

It could certainly have gone higher if things went badly.

Accordingly, we also have to show respect to our opponents.”

... the second leg: "We have a home game next week, we're down 0-1.

It's halfway through the series and we're going to pull ourselves together now and see that we win the Bundesliga game at the weekend and then it's next Tuesday.

Then we already know what to do.

But you saw, it's not this opponent that you can just walk over so easily."

Julian Nagelsmann (FC Bayern Munich coach) on ...

... the defeat: "We didn't play well today in all areas.

We deserved to lose.

They could have scored more goals.

But we're still confident for the second leg, so we have to act differently.

(...) We couldn't put enough stress on the opponent.

We invited them with simple ball losses and rarely changed the game.

In the second half, the will was more there, but not with the necessary calculation.”

… about FC Villarreal: “They can gamble, you can see that, they have good footballers.

You played your way out of very tight situations.

We didn't take the final steps in a duel and often stopped short of it.

The opponent then has the quality to combine to get out of there - you can see that, they are a typical Spanish team."

... Alphonso Davies: "You could see that he still needs time.

It will be a while before he finds his rhythm.

But physically he is in good shape.”

... Leon Goretzka: "He has a cut and a black eye.

But I don't think it's a crystal-clear penalty."

FC Bayern Munich at FC Villarreal: Kahn and Nagelsmann before the game

Oliver Kahn (CEO FC Bayern Munich) before the game over ...

... "the weeks of truth": "Of course, these are the weeks that all our players are looking forward to, because now it's also about winning the titles.

Now every game is broadly a final - and that's what we've been working towards all year."

... Opponents FC Villarreal: "Nonetheless, it's anything but an easy task today when I hear again and again, 'FC Bayern are big favorites and, and, and.'

First you have to beat a very strong, very, very uncomfortable opponent in two games and then we'll see."

… the potential newcomers Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui (both Ajax Amsterdam): “I also like to repeat myself that I am not talking about players from other clubs, but that we always talk about it when there is actually something to do report there."

Demand from

DAZN

moderator Alex Schlueter: "And that doesn't exist yet?" - "Not that I knew."

… SC Freiburg’s appeal after the error in the change: “We are convinced that we didn’t make any mistakes, but I also said that we totally trust the sports courts.

That's why we'll see what comes out then."

Julian Nagelsmann (FC Bayern Munich coach) before the game over ...

... Opponent FC Villarreal: "It's challenging, they've got Juve (Juventus Turin; editor's

note

) packed, that describes quite a lot.

They're an incredibly experienced team that tactically plays four or five different formations within a game.

There is variation between high pressure and deep defending, but also between opening up under a lot of pressure and under less pressure - they and especially Unai Emery (coach FC Villarreal; editor's

note

) are very variable, which is tactical regards.

That presents us with major challenges.”

... about Alphonso Davies' comeback: "We also wanted to be variable today in terms of approach and playing with the ball.

We try to play different orders, and that's how we react to their different orders.

Because Phonzie is now fit again, we managed the switch the easiest in the constellation.”
