Coming from behind: the best English defender who has never played for the national team Israel today

2022-04-28T09:05:57.158Z

The 30-year-old James Tavernier from Rangers is one of the most prolific defenders in the world, but the right-back position of the England team is one of the busiest in world football • Tonight he will want to bring his team closer to the Europa League final

One of the busiest positions in world football today is that of the right-back in the England squad.

There are Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool, Reese James from Chelsea, Kieran Trifaire from Newcastle, Kyle Walker from Manchester City and Aron Van-Bisaka from United.

So crowded, that the Rangers 'player of the season, who has already scored 15 goals in all competitions and is at the top of the European League conquerors' table, does not even have an appearance in the England national team uniform.

This is James Tavernier.

30 years old, from 2015 Rangers, one of the most prolific right-backs in the world.

Last week, in a 1-3 win over Motherwell in the league, the Englishman scored his 80th goal in his 340th appearance in the blue uniform, to which he also added 106 assists.

Last season he helped the Rangers regain the championship title after a decade and was even named Scotland Player of the Year.

This season helped the team reach the semi-finals of the Europa League against RB Leipzig, having so far scored six goals that place it at the top of the conquerors' table alongside strikers such as Carl Toko-Akambi Million and Galano Porto.

At the same time, a few days ago he was selected by the club players as the Rangers player of the season.

"This award is important to me and excites me very much," Tavernier said, "I will try to keep getting better every day and try to help the team as much as possible."

So how come such a player is not counted in the England squad?

The answer, apparently, lies in the way he has done so far: Although Tavernier grew up in Newcastle, he very quickly entered the never-ending cycle of questions.

He was first loaned to the amateur Gateshead, then to Carlisle United, Sheffield United, MK Dunes, Shrewsbury Town and Rotharham United - six league leagues in four years.

Only recently, at the age of 23, did the defender realize that it is now or never.

Coach Steve Evans did not like Tavernier's approach and asked firmly, "Did you come to waste our time or move forward and evolve?".

The Englishman answered with his feet - five goals and six assists helped Rotherham advance to the Championship and made Wigan the first to acquire the player from Newcastle.

She sent him on loan to Bristol City - and then Rangers arrived.

Question mark for reading

In 2015, after failing to make the league, the Scottish Empire and coach Mark Warburton were looking for players to help it return to its natural size.

Tavernier was one of 11 players she acquired that summer, when the price she paid for it was $ 200,000.

A goal with a free kick was a sign of what was to come: 15 goals and 23 assists in his debut season, which ended with a ticket to the Premier League.

"He came here as a question mark," said former striker Kenny Miller, "but very quickly showed his tremendous qualities."

Since then, Tavernier has been the undisputed star of Rangers.

A modern right-back who makes defense and attack, scores with penalties and free kicks and scores amounts of goals.

He scored his six goals in the Europa League in the knockout stages, including three against Dortmund and two in the quarter-finals against Braga.

This performance brought Tavernier compliments from here to a new post, raising the question of why he is not in England - a national team or a big team.

"A lot of Premier League teams have approached him in recent years," Evans says, "but he doesn't seem to want to leave, he's fine here."

With the possibility of reaching the European final and star status in Scotland, one can understand Tavernier - the best English defender who has never played for the England team.
