UEFA, in turn, said it would "review matters urgently" while the French sports ministry called a meeting with UEFA, the French Football Federation, stadium officials and police "to draw lessons from the event".
The kick-off at the Stade de France was delayed by about 36 minutes, with UEFA initially citing the late arrival of the fans, but many Liverpool fans spoke of long queues in the hours leading up to the match and violent police dealing with the crowds.
Later, UEFA attributed the delay to security reasons and said: “The turnstiles on the side of the seats allocated to the Liverpool team were blocked by thousands of fans who bought fake tickets that do not work and therefore the gates did not open.”
French police have also been criticized for firing tear gas and pepper spray at some Liverpool fans who were waiting to enter the stadium in the capital, Paris, last Saturday.
