The former Algerian player was sentenced Thursday in Algiers to six months in prison for accounting embezzlement.

Rabah Madjer was sentenced Thursday in Algiers to six months in prison for accounting embezzlement, according to the local press.

The Algiers court sanctioned the former star of Algeria for “false declarations” accounting.

A co-accused, presented under the identity of Brahim M. by the Algerian press, was also sentenced.

At the beginning of June, the prosecutor had requested 18 months in prison against the former footballer.

The other lawsuits for "forgery and use of forgery" and "fraud" have been dropped.

The former Porto striker and the co-accused have ten days to appeal.

They will also have to pay a fine of 500,000 dinars (3,200 euros) to the plaintiff, the National Publishing and Advertising Agency (ANEP).

The 63-year-old former Algerian coach owned two newspapers, Al Balagh as well as Al Balagh Erriadhi, and reportedly continued to cash public advertising checks from ANEP a year after the two ducks were closed.

Before his legal troubles, Madjer was best known for his goal scored on a backheel in the European Cup with FC Porto against Bayern Munich in 1987. He gave his name to this gesture.

He was also the coach of the Fennecs, the Algerian national team, for eight months before being sacked at the end of June 2018 after a series of poor results.

He had been replaced by Djamel Belmadi at the head of the selection.
