Fifth consecutive participation

If Australia once again had to go through the play-off box, as in 2018, to access the World Cup, Australian players are starting to become regular guests.

They will indeed participate in their fifth consecutive World Cup since the epic of their golden generation in 2006 (eighth finals lost against the Italian, future world champion), carried by Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell, John Aloisi, Mark Viduka and Lucas Neill.

Australia's last appearances in the World Cup:

  • 2006: 1/8th final

  • 2010: Group (Germany, Ghana, Serbia)

  • 2014: Group (Netherlands, Chile, Spain)

  • 2018: Group (

A nation in reconstruction

Since the retirements of Tim Cahill and Mile Jedinak in 2018, Australia has been in the midst of reconstruction and is looking to install several leaders within the selection.

Led by Australian legend Graham Arnold on the bench since 2018, the

Socceroos

have won 19 of their last 31 meetings, with just six losses recorded.

In search of stability, Australia can count on a few youngsters to watch Nathaniel Atkinson (23 years old / Heart of Midlothian), Harry Souttar (23 years old / Stoke City), Connor Metcalfe (22 years old / St. Pauli), Riley McGree ( 22 / Middlesbrough) and Kye Rowles (23 / Heart of Midlothian).

An attack-oriented formation

To validate his ticket, coach Graham Arnold modified his classic 4-4-2 device for a 4-1-4-1 with an assumed offensive philosophy.

Against Peru on Monday, he lined up Leckie, Irvine, Hrustic, Boyle on offense with Mitchell Duke up front.

To see in the coming months if Arnold maintains this new formation worked largely within the framework of the dams.

But with the return of his attacking playmaker Tom Rogic, the Celtic Glasgow player, there is no doubt that he will continue the experience of total football.

Executives in European clubs

Several senior players play in the major European championships, which allows them to bring the experience necessary for the proper conduct of a World Cup.

Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, who worked for Arsenal and Valencia, now plays for Real Sociedad.

Ajdin Hrustic was a major architect of Frankfurt's fine season punctuated by the Europa League Conference trophy.

Brandon Borrello has worn the colors of Kaiserslautern, Freiburg and Düsseldorl in Germany.

While Awer Mabil played in La Liga, at Cadiz this season.

Without forgetting the Franco-Australian Denis Genreau from Toulouse.

The beginnings of the championship

Created only in 2004, the A-League is a fairly young championship which is beginning a slow but capital development under the impetus of City Group (Emirati group which also owns Manchester City) which bought the Melbourne City club.

For several seasons, many expansions have taken place in order to add several new Australian clubs.

In 2020, football experts concluded that the A-League was entering a new era of crisis, due to a major lack of competitiveness and that total reforms needed to be made to improve the league, including the introduction of promotion and relegation system.

In response, A-League officials announced in May 2021 that the league would align with the domestic match schedule to avoid conflicts with FIFA matchdays, as well as the introduction of the domestic transfer system and national club licensing frameworks.
