PSG Handball: "Being champion for the 8th year in a row, it should not be trivialized"... Thierry Omeyer takes stock of the season

On Thursday, the general manager of PSG Handball took stock of the Parisian season and plans for the next one with a remodeled group.

During a press conference held in the privacy of the Initiale Café, Thierry Omeyer returned to the Ile-de-France season, free of defeats in the league but contrasting in the European Cup.

Despite the upheaval in the workforce, the ex-keeper says that the club retains the same ambitions.

The Parisian team recorded the departure of 5 major players.

Remili, Kounkoud, Hansen, Gérard and Genty give way to Palicka, Green, Balaguer, Gibelin and Mathé.

Less galactic names that should not completely break the "continuity" maintained by the reigning French champions, according to the 45-year-old general manager.

What is your assessment of this season?

THIERRY OMEYER.

To be champion of France for the 8th year in a row, it should not be trivialized.

The championship is more and more competitive, achieving this 30 out of 30 shows the degree of involvement of the boys and the coach.

I am happy that they are rewarded with this record and this very successful Coupe de France final (36-31 against Nantes).

In the media, I find that we trivialize a bit what the players have achieved.

You haven't had the same success in the Champions League...

It's a disappointment because it was a goal to return to the Final Four for the sixth time in seven years.

We fell against Kiel, it's down to one goal (30-30, 32-33).

We could have qualified on our last action.

It was played in the last seconds of the return match.

It's a shame because everyone wanted to finish the adventure on the weekend of June 18-19.

With regard to the departure of executives, arrivals, extensions, has the short and medium term project changed?

Last season, we were in continuity with few changes in the workforce.

But it can't happen every year.

We have new players to integrate but those who were already there will help bring this continuity.

Today, the coach makes the players play well together.

On the back base, we still have Steins, Karabatic, Prandi, N'Tanzi, Kristopans, the 3 pivots continue.

Admittedly, two goalkeepers (Andreas Palicka and Jannick Green) have just arrived but this does not require the same tactical adaptations.

Has the strategy changed in terms of budget, payroll?

I find it difficult to grasp this financial side.

We still have a large budget, which allows us to compete with the best teams in the championship.

Afterwards, we have encountered the same concern for a long time: many projects are being set up abroad, such as in Aalborg or Kolstad, where the taxation is not the same.

We cannot fight fiscally with clubs from countries like Poland or Hungary.

Do the goals remain the same?

The project continues.

We have announced signings, extensions for the years post 2022/2023 (Luc Steins and Kamil Syprzak).

Over the next few seasons, a renewal will take place without losing this ambition of playing for national titles and qualifying for the Final Four in the Champions League.
