Israel's women's water polo team opened today (Saturday) the European Championship being held in Split, with a huge 7:8 victory over powerful France.
The blues and whites did not start the game well, when the French scored two quick goals and one more later.
Two minutes to the end of the first quarter, Israel got on the board for the first time with a goal by Alma Jacobi, who added one more before the end, and went down at the end of the first 8 minutes with a 3:2 deficit.
France, which won the bronze medal twice in this championship in 1987 and 1989, continued its success in the second quarter as well, when it scored twice, but Miriam Bogachenko kept Israel in the game with two goals of her own and the half ended with 4:5.
The girls of
Dimitris
of Brutas came up differently for the second half, and with a strong defense, scored four goals and did not concede once in an amazing third quarter.
In the last quarter, the French managed to shrink, but this did not prevent the huge victory with 7:8.
Scorers for Israel:
Alma Jacobi (4), Miriam Bogachenko (3), Shonit Strugo (1)
Also at the Israeli home, Spain beat Serbia 3:32, and Italy beat Slovakia 1:26.
In the corresponding house, Germany achieved a 10:15 victory over Romania, and the Netherlands defeated the host Croatia 6:22.
Tomorrow (Sunday) Israel will meet Slovakia at 12:30.
As a reminder, as first published in "Israel Hayom", next year, the European Championship will also come to Israel for the first time and will be held at the Expo in Tel Aviv.
