FC Schalke 04 defeated VfL Bochum 3-1 (1-0) in the Saturday evening game of the 6th Bundesliga matchday.
Already on the 6th day of the game, there was a groundbreaking game in the table basement: The winless Schalke met the pointless Bochumer.
And they had to accept the first blow to the neck early in the game: Takuma Asano left the pitch injured after three minutes.
The hosts had the first chances of the game, but Simon Terodde missed the lead twice (7th and 15th minutes).
Bochum played well but conceded the first goal of the evening: VfL goalkeeper Manuel Riemann rebounded a slightly deflected shot from Marius Bülter, where Dominick Drexler put the ball straight into the far post (38').
VfL equalized shortly after the restart: Gerrit Holtmann found Philipp Hofmann in the back of the defense, whose shot was extended by striker Simon Zoller just before the line (52').
The referee team initially ruled offside, but was rightly overruled by the video assistant.
An own goal decides the game
Terodde then missed again, hitting the bar from the inside left in the 71st minute.
But two minutes later, the arena, which was sold out with more than 60,000 spectators, was still celebrating: Erhan Mašović deflected a free kick from the inside right into Riemann's own net (73').
In added time, Sebastian Polter made it 3-1 (90+6).
Thanks to the win, Schalke 04 moved up to 12th place, Bochum remained bottom of the table without a point.
VfL will host 1. FC Köln next Sunday (5.30 p.m.), Schalke will play on Saturday at 3.30 p.m. in the district derby at Borussia Dortmund.
