Carlos Alcarez and Casper Rudd are still a long way from the big three of Federer-Nadal-Djokovic, but now they have stepped onto the main court at the US Open and will be fighting not only for their first Grand Slam title, but also for the top spot in the rankings.
If Alcarez wins, he will become the youngest No. 1 in history and break Lleyton Hewitt's record.
Rudd wants to become the first ever Norwegian to do so, but with all due respect to the ranking - the really big prize is winning the final Grand Slam of 2022. The two rising tennis players have met twice before and both times Elcarras won.
The first time was in Marbella in 2021 and the second in the finals of the Miami tournament, about five months ago.
The 23-year-old Norwegian hopes his debut victory over the 19-year-old Spaniard will be on the biggest stage.
Perhaps the main question is how fresh the Spaniard will be after three consecutive matches in which he won in five sets.
Another question is whether Rudd will have an advantage due to the fact that he has already reached a Grand Slam final at Roland Garros this year.
