SV Darmstadt 98 took advantage of the mistake made by Hamburger SV (0:3 at FC St. Pauli) and conquered the top of the table with a 2:1 (0:1) at Karlsruher SC.
Darmstadt had lost 98 at the start of the season, followed by ten games without defeat.
Accordingly, coach Torsten Lieberknecht had little reason to change his formation.
Only Yassin Ben Balla made his debut, Frank Ronstadt replaced him on the bench.
Since KSC also went into the game with the tailwind of two victories, a match developed from the start that was played with a lot of commitment and speed.
However, a standard situation was needed for the goal to be scored: Karlsruhe's Philip Heise brought a free-kick cross from the left half field perfectly to the first post, where Fabian Schleusener headed in (19th minute).
It was his fifth goal of the season.
Tietz decides the game
Again Schleusener and in the margin Malik Batmaz (26th) missed the 2-0 for the hosts.
The goal came on the other side: Patric Pfeiffer was perfectly in the air after a corner this time and equalized with a header (49').
As a result, both teams initially missed the decisive goal - until the guests finally struck shortly before the end.
Phillip Tietz scored the surprising winning goal in the 88th minute.
For both teams, the second round of the DFB Cup continues during the week.
Darmstadt welcomes Borussia Mönchengladbach on Tuesday (8.45 p.m.), KSC has to go to SV Sandhausen on Wednesday (6 p.m.).
Other results:
Fortuna Dusseldorf – 1. FC Nuremberg 0: 1 (0: 0)
1. FC Magdeburg – Eintracht Braunschweig 0: 2 (0: 0)
