At the half marathon in Valencia, Nick Jäger was the best German athlete with 1:05:06 hours.

But the focus was solely on a player from Leverkusen, who also came up trumps.

Valencia – The big headlines belonged exclusively to Konstanze Klosterhalfen.

The 25-year-old from Leverkusen actually provided a highlight at the half marathon in Valencia.

Not only that she was the first European woman to win the always high-class competition in Spain on her debut on this route.

With a time of 1:05:41 hours, the 5000 meter European champion moved up to second place in the all-time German list of the best.

In general, only two European women had previously run the 21.0975 kilometers faster: Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands (1:05:15) and Melat Kejeta from Germany (Kassel running team/1:05:18).

Nick Jäger runs a personal best in Valencia

All really impressive numbers and values, but at the same time it was a pity that the articles in the national media and even on the homepage of the German Athletics Association did not name the athlete who was the only German man to finish before Klosterhalfen: Nick Jäger .

With a time of 1:05:06 hours in his second half marathon, the 23-year-old from TSV Penzberg clearly undercut his previous record (1:07:16/run this year in the victory in Kempten).

In the men's classification, Jäger - as the best of 156 Germans - took 45th place.

In the DLV leaderboard, the Penzberger is in 14th place.

The best time this year was Amanal Petros (1:01:34) from TV Wattenscheid in September in Copenhagen.

Petros is also the German record holder with 60:09 minutes – he ran the time in Valencia in 2021.

This year in Spain, ten Kenyans and Ethiopians battled it out for the top spots, with six runners staying under the 60-minute mark.

Kibiwott Kandie (58:10) from Kenya won ahead of Yomif Kejelcha (Ethiopia/58:32) and Daniel Mateiko (Kenya/58:40).

The best time of the year by Uganda's world record holder Jacob Kiplimo (57:56) remained untouched.

Jäger – together with training colleague Florian Bremm (TV Leutershausen) from the Erlangen running group “Running Gags” – traveled to Spain with the clear goal of running a personal best.

He and his trainer and mother Melanie Jäger "had speculated in advance with a low 65 time," said TSV runner Markus Brennauer.

As planned, Nick Jäger covered the first kilometers at a pace of 3:05 minutes per kilometer.

This corresponds to a speed of 19.4 km/h.

Jäger and Bremm started with the fastest group of women, which also included Klosterhalfen.

Jäger completed the first ten kilometers in 30:47 minutes.

"Even before the 10-kilometer mark, it was extremely difficult to keep up the pace," reported the Penzberger.

At this point, Bremm was already a good 20 seconds behind his “Running Gags” colleague.

While Jäger hardly slowed down and ran the second ten kilometers in 30:54 minutes, Bremm broke down and crossed the finish line after 1:09:55 hours (116th place).

But he was still the second best German man.

Nick Jäger now has three records in his training group, which also includes European Championship finalist Niklas Buchholz (3000 meters obstacle).

Because the time in Valencia meant a team-internal record.

Jäger is also the best over the 2000 meters (5:20.08 minutes) and over ten kilometers (29:50).

The biology student recently ran the latter record as part of the Munich marathon.

Nick Jäger had won the day.
