World Cup dream burst: strong performances are not enough - Flick does without Bremen star

Hansi Flick already has his provisional squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in mind.

In addition to a few surprises, a Bundesliga top performer is missing from the squad.

Bremen – The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is imminent and on November 10, national coach Hansi Flick has to announce his final squad of 26 men.

A maximum of 55 players had to be registered with FIFA by October 21st.

The DFB was silent at first about the XXL squad, but now the preliminary squad is said to have been leaked.

One player who is one of the absolute top performers in the current Bundesliga season is missing from the list - and thus also at the World Cup: Mitchell Weiser.

The provisional squad should not give much information about the final squad for the 2022 World Cup, as 18 of the 44 announced players will still be deleted.

One player who has performed well this season is Werder Bremen's Mitchell Weiser.

The right-back has been involved in five direct goals in the Bundesliga so far, making him the best scorer of all German defenders.

Apparently that's not reason enough for the national coach to at least call the 28-year-old into the extended squad.

This is particularly surprising because the right-back position in the national team has been a problem area since Philipp Lahm retired.

Thilo Kehrer is currently playing in this position, but the West Ham United star did not really convince against England and Hungary.

Who will be the right-back for Germany at the 2022 World Cup?

In the provisional squad there is only one “real” right-back in Benjamin Henrichs.

Lukas Klostermann, who can also hold this position, is also there.

Nevertheless, the choice against Weiser, at least in the XXL squad for the 2022 World Cup, is debatable.

On the one hand because the Werder Bremen player is one of the players in the best form in this position and on the other hand because of the few right-backs in Germany.

But one thing seems certain: Mitchell Weiser will not go to the World Cup in Qatar.
