After nearly nine years in the job, Jurgen Klopp officially announced today (Friday) that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
The coach kept the contract for another two years beyond the current season, but for his own reasons decided to part ways already this summer.
Klopp's staff will also leave the club in the summer, with his senior assistant Pep Leinders embarking on a freelance coaching career.
Klopp explained the reasons for leaving in an interview on the club's official website: "I understand that this is a market for many people who are hearing so much for the first time. I love everything about the club and the city, I am starting to run out of energy. Now I have no problem, I knew I would have to announce it at some point, but I know That I won't be able to do the job again and again. After everything we've been through together, the love and appreciation for you has grown."
"I informed the club already in November. Last season was very difficult and there were moments when if I had been at another club, they would probably have thanked me and said goodbye. This did not happen here. It was important for me to get the team back on track, that's all I thought about. When I saw early on that the team is very good and with Great potential, so I could start thinking about myself again and this is the result."
Liverpool is still competing in four competitions, and this week they qualified for the final of the League Cup, and Klopp insists on saving the farewells and gestures for the end of the season: "There will be time for that. The president of Liverpool's ownership group, Mike Gordon, said goodbye to the German coach: "We are very sad to lose not only the coach, but also the person and leader for whom we gain so much respect and gratitude. Klopp arrived at Liverpool in October 2015, after the dismissal of Brendan Rodgers and presented himself as "the normal", as a paraphrase of Jose Mourinho's "special" nickname. In Germany, he broke out in Mainz and won two consecutive championships and a cup with Borussia Dortmund, which he also led to the Champions League final in 2012/13, but in Liverpool he has already become one of the top coaches in the world.
