EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini reiterated the EU's adherence to the nuclear deal with Iran.
Mogherini cautiously welcomed the idea of negotiations between the United States and Iran, commenting on US President Donald Trump's announcement that he was open to meeting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. "Whenever people talk, they understand each other better based on clarity and respect."
However, she added: "First and foremost, what exists - the 2015 agreement officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action must be preserved."
The Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araghchi said yesterday that his country will not accept any negotiations with the United States in the circumstances of continued pressure on Tehran, adding, "Negotiating under pressure is a surrender and not a negotiation."
