Beirut-Sana
Lebanese President General Michel Aoun expressed his satisfaction at the UN Security Council's decision last night to renew the international forces operating in southern Lebanon UNIFIL.
Aoun said in a statement today that "the efforts exerted by Lebanon at various levels, especially at the level of Lebanese diplomacy and the response of brotherly and friendly countries, indicate the extent of these countries' interest in preserving the safety of Lebanon and ensuring the implementation of the provisions of UN Resolution 1701 despite the daily Israeli violations." He explained that the decision came without any amendment in the tasks of the UN forces or in the number or budget.
Aoun pointed out that the resolution reaffirms the international community's commitment to maintain stability on the southern border, which Lebanon is working towards, contrary to the violations by the Israeli occupation forces on land, sea and air condemned by the resolution.
The UN Security Council has extended the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for a year.
