(CNN) - A rebel alliance of British lawmakers voted to take control of the parliamentary agenda, inflicting a humiliating defeat on Prime Minister Boris Johnson and threatening to derail his Brexit plans.
The government lost 328 votes to 301, which prompted Johnson to immediately announce that he would seek an election instead of being forced to request another "meaningless delay" for the brexit process.
The rebel group of all parties will try to pass a bill on Wednesday that will prevent the United Kingdom from leaving the European Union on October 31 without an agreement. The prime minister, meanwhile, will challenge the opposition Labor Party to vote in favor of a general election.
“Let there be no doubt about the consequences of this vote tonight. It means that parliament is about to break any agreement we can reach in Brussels, ”Johnson told the House of Commons moments after the vote was announced.
In an extraordinarily brutal purge, the 21 conservative legislators who voted in favor of the measure were expelled from the parliamentary party. Kenneth Clarke, who has been a conservative legislator for 49 years, told the BBC that he was optimistic about the decision. "I knew what I was doing," he told the Newsnight program. Clarke said his party had been taken by extremists: “Anyone who says that I am not conservative is adopting a strange political vision. It's the Brexit Party with another name. ”
