Saxony-Anhalt: CDU base brings cooperation with AfD into play

2019-09-03T14:40:23.981Z

In Brandenburg and Saxony, the Kenya Coalition is an option, they already exist in Saxony-Anhalt - and the CDU is having a hard time. Now the dispute over cooperation with the AfD has flared up again.

In the CDU in Saxony-Anhalt, a document fuels the dispute over how the party should position itself against the AfD. A new proposal paper of the district of Harz reads like an appeal to the members of the CDU not to exclude a future coalition or cooperation with the right-wing populists - but without naming the party concrete. District chairman in the resin is Ulrich Thomas, the deputy CDU parliamentary group leader in the state parliament.

First, the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" reported on the paper. The district association confirmed the statements on request. It is a proposal that should be discussed more widely in the party. "Future government alliances must be made for the CDU with the parties, with which there are the largest intersections", it is said among other things, combined with the demands for tougher deportation regulations and a ban on full veiling.

"Weakening of the CDU as the last remaining People's Party"

In Saxony-Anhalt ruled the Kenya coalition, an alliance of CDU, SPD and Greens. It says: "Current constellations lead to the significant weakening of the CDU as the last remaining People's Party, because they strengthen the particular interests of marginalized groups, small parties and the opposition at the expense of their own content." The own party gives the impression at present that one ruled "for the sake of the government's sake". In the state election in 2021 the CDU threatens therefore "a fiasco".

Only in June had Fraktionsvize Thomas settled in a strategy paper with the current CDU rate. In the text titled "Denkpapier," Thomas called for combining "national and social" lamenting an "increase in new brutal crime" due to "uncontrolled migration." And said, "We should not rule out a coalition, it's not possible now - but we do not know what the situation will be in two or five years." Co-author of the paper was Lars-Jörn Zimmer, also deputy CDU parliamentary vice.

The CDU in Saxony-Anhalt had commissioned its ex-Finance Minister André Schröder, in response to the "Denkpapier", to work out a new position paper in a working group. This was presented on Saturday in the state board. The provincial party affirmed that any cooperation with the AfD should be ruled out. However, there is still no decision of the committee.

Danger for the Kenya coalition

The district association Harz has responded to this and obviously demands to reconsider this position. The political spokesman for the Greens in Saxony-Anhalt, Sebastian Striegel, makes it clear that a Kenya coalition would be over, should this position prevail over the coalition partner. "The CDU is apparently in a negotiation process with unclear results." A copy of a right-wing national party, the CDU certainly not lead to new electoral success, "says Striegel the SPIEGEL.

The objection of the Conservatives from the Harz comes at a delicate time. In Saxony and Brandenburg, the three parties CDU, SPD and Greens are also exploring the possibilities of a Kenyan coalition. In Saxony-Anhalt, there was always a clinch between CDU and Greens.

Only recently could the tripartite alliance stabilize and together chose the AfD politician Daniel Roi as chairman of the Extremism Committee, because in the past had participated in demonstrations of right-wing extremists.
