LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson failed on Thursday to get enough lawmakers to press ahead with his plan for early elections.
Reuters said Johnson needed the support of at least 434 deputies, but only 298 voted in favor of the vote, 56 against and the opposition Labor Party instructed its deputies to abstain.
On the other hand, the British House of Representatives passed a law today requesting the postponement of the Brexit date, which is another blow to Johnson to prevent the exit of the country without an agreement with the European Union on 31 October.
The text was voted by lawmakers by 327 votes to 299 in the third and final reading.
Johnson has repeatedly vowed to get his country out of the European bloc on time, threatening members of the Conservative Party to be excluded if they oppose the exit plan and hinted that early elections could be held if they rejected the Brexit plan.
