Three months after the assassination of Kasseler CDU politician Walter Lübcke there is a successor: The previous deputy have led the authority through "bad weeks," said Prime Minister Volker Bouffier.

The regional council of Northern Hesse gets a new leader: Hermann-Josef Klüber (CDU) succeeds Walter Lübcke, who was shot in early June. This decision was announced by Prime Minister Volker Bouffier and Interior Minister Peter Beuth (both CDU) in Wiesbaden. Klüber is currently Vice President of the Regional Council of Kassel.

The terrible death of Lübcke is still deeply in the bones of everyone, but "in our mourning and in memory of Walter Lübcke we know that it would have been his desire to give his work and his region into the hands of a successor, in his spirit keeps things going, "said Bouffier.

Lübcke had been killed on the terrace of his home in Wolfhagen near Kassel in northern Hesse with a headshot. The Attorney General is based on a right-wing extremist background. The main suspect, Stephan E., arrested about two weeks after the crime had initially filed a confession, but later revoked it. He is being charged with murder, and investigations into Markus H. and Elmar J. are also under investigation for alleged involvement in the sale of the murder weapon.

The 63-year-old Klüber was the staff of the authority in the aftermath of Lübcke murder "an important support" and have led the regional council "through these bad weeks," said Bouffier. It would have been in the sense of Lübckes, "to give his work and his region into the hands of a successor, who continues in his sense of things".

Klüber became Vice President of the Regional Council of Kassel in 2017. Previously, he held the office provisionally for three years. The lawyer was a prosecutor at the district court of Fulda, before he worked in Thuringia in the Justice and later in the Ministry of the Interior. Prior to joining the Kassel regional council, Klüber was state police vice-president in the Hessian Ministry of the Interior.
