Landtag election in October: In Thuringia threatens a difficult formation of government

2019-09-16T17:28:31.781Z

In just under six weeks, Thuringia chooses a new state parliament, and a recent survey gives a mixed picture: Red-red-green comes to 43 percent, CDU and AfD are increasing.

Whether the Thuringian Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) can continue his red-red-green government coalition after the election is completely open. Barely six weeks before the state elections in Thuringia, a new poll suggests a difficult government formation in the state.

According to a representative survey by Infratest dimap, the current alliance of the Left, SPD and Greens would only reach 43 percent, as MDR Thüringen announced as the commissioner of the survey.

While the left has increased by 3 percentage points compared to the last survey of the same institute and is at 28 percent, its government partners have suffered losses: the SPD comes down to only 7 (minus 1), the Greens to 8 percent.

For the Social Democrats, such a result would be the worst so far in Thuringia. Compared to the poll at the end of July, the Greens are scoring 3 points, but would do even better than in the 2014 state election. In Thuringia, a new parliament will be elected on 27 October.

The AfD can once again improve compared to the previous survey of the institute (plus 1) and reaches 25 percent of their previous all-time high in Thuringia. The CDU also scores a point, but remains 22 percent, as in the survey at the end of July in third place. The FDP must continue to fear for their entry into the state parliament. She ends up in the survey at 5 percent.

A CDU-led coalition would also not have enough votes to form a government. For example, an alliance of the CDU, SPD, Greens and FDP would only get 42 percent of the vote. With the AfD all parties represented in the Thuringian state parliament have excluded cooperation

At the beginning of September, Thuringia's top CDU candidate Mike Mohring was annoyed with too little help from Berlin. "I very much hope that more tailwind will come from Berlin for the Thuringian state elections in October than last," said Mohring. Before the elections in Saxony and Brandenburg, "not everything was helpful from Berlin".
