The European Parliament has approved the appointment of French Christine Lagarde as president of the European Central Bank, paving the way for becoming the first woman to hold the post.
According to Reuters, 394 deputies in the European Parliament voted for the appointment of Lagarde against 206 deputies opposed, while 49 deputies abstained during the plenary session of the parliament in the eastern city of Strasbourg.
Lagarde submitted her resignation from the position of Director-General of the International Monetary Fund last July, which will come into effect in September, explaining that her candidacy for the post of President of the European Central Bank made this decision to facilitate the process of choosing a successor in the management of the Fund.
