On the expansion of its cultivation, Dr. Abdul Messih Duaij, a member of the Saffron Propagation Committee in Syria, said in a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin that there is a tendency from the concerned authorities to increase the cultivated areas and support farmers and encourage them to cultivate it due to its high economic returns and its health importance. He explained that all types of Syrian soils are suitable for plant cultivation, where the native habitat of the Mediterranean basin and its basic environment is a moderate dry environment and is currently studying the places where it is successful and the size of the kormat to be planted, pointing out that the plan includes all directorates and the initial results of production reached 90 percent of the flowers in chickpeas.
Daeij pointed out that the committee in charge of studying the publication and propagation of saffron plant met recently in the Ministry of Agriculture with the aim of drawing up the executive plan for the agricultural season 2019-2020, including the number of kormat, places and area in addition to updating the executive matrix to include the material and financial requirements required for each of the three stages of work.
It is worth mentioning that the Saffron Cultivation Project was a great success at Al-Bureij Nursery last year, where flowers were harvested and wild genotypes and laboratory propagation were monitored as part of a 3-year program.
