Citrus Office: Early harvesting harms Syrian product specifications in foreign markets

Hamdan pointed out the existence of a study to approve legal legislation to hold traders or brokers who manipulate the specifications of Syrian agricultural products and abuse them in the export markets in order to achieve additional material profit, as happened in the Iraqi markets, calling for consumer protection patrols to follow up the concerns of packaging and sorting and strict control of cases of fraud in the specifications of citrus marketed.

Hamdan revealed that the adoption of citrus support system and approval in the Council of Ministers will contribute significantly to the transfer of citrus file from quantum to type, where the Ministry of Agriculture will work in cooperation with all ministries and public bodies concerned with the file production, marketing and export of citrus crop to reach large production with distinct specifications.

He pointed out that the Ministry of Agriculture has officially started implementing a project to rehabilitate citrus cultivation, which includes the production of reliable and disease-free citrus mothers, in addition to a comprehensive documentation of Syrian citrus specifications in terms of form and composition and adoption locally and globally and the establishment of an electronic database covering the whole citrus planting and harvesting and marketing operations as well as establishment To apply the concept of Syrian citrus industry instead of growing citrus fruits in the light of the availability of the most important requirements of good fruits and abundant production and varieties, which achieves an added value of production up to 100 percent.

Syria is ranked third in the Arab world, seventh Mediterranean and eighteenth globally in the production of citrus.The preliminary production estimates of the citrus crop in Syria for the agricultural season 2019-2020 indicate that the quantities produced exceed one million tons.
