The Spanish Supreme Court sentenced the 13-year imprisonment to the then deputy prime minister of Junkeras for rebellion for allegedly invoking a referendum on independence in the northeastern state of Catalonia in 2017. Residents who support independence are protesting, protesting and trying to close the airport.
According to AFP, eight other state ministers were sentenced to 12-9 years' imprisonment and 3 to fines. The Spanish prosecutor demanded Junkerras for 25 years imprisonment for a more guilty state treason, but the Supreme Court applied rebellion.
While the province has its own language and culture, it has been repressed, including the prohibition of Catalan use during the Franco dictatorship. It is also a wealthy region where the automobile industry is prosperous, and it is highly motivated to become independent.
In October 2005, the state government held a referendum after shaking the injunction of the Constitutional Court. Further compulsory declarations of independence deepened conflict with the country, such as the autonomy of the Spanish central government being suspended.
