(CNN) - After months of negotiations, Britain and the European Union agreed on Thursday a new agreement for Brexit, according to a statement by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker.
An important point of the plan had been the question of the Irish border.
According to Juncker, the withdrawal agreement "focused on the protocol on Ireland / Northern Ireland and sought to identify a mutually satisfactory solution to address the specific circumstances on the island of Ireland."
The next challenge for Johnson will be to obtain the approval of the British Parliament, particularly the Party of the Democratic Union of Northern Ireland.
The support of the Democratic Party of Northern Ireland is crucial for Johnson to obtain majority support. But shortly after the withdrawal agreement was announced, the party said its previous stance, to reject the new agreement, had not changed.
Johnson said in a tweet that the new agreement, which replaces the one reached by his predecessor Theresa May, "retakes control."
He urged Parliament to “complete Brexit on Saturday,” at the next meeting of legislators.
If Johnson cannot obtain parliamentary support for his plan before Saturday, he must write to the EU requesting an extension of the brexit deadline until January 31, 2020.
Now there are only 14 days left until October 31, the stipulated date for Britain's departure from the EU.
