[Brussels 17 Reuters]-Barnier, EU's chief negotiator of the EU's withdrawal from the European Union (Bregit), said the UK and EU had agreed on a new withdrawal agreement on the 17th. Said it will be submitted to the EU summit meeting on the 17th.
Barnier said at a conference held after the agreement between Britain and the EU, “The talks have fallen into a very tough situation, but we have achieved it.”
According to Barnier, the new agreement guarantees citizenship and the UK fulfills its commitment to the EU budget. The transition period, which is a measure for mitigating drastic changes after withdrawal, is in principle extended to the end of 2020 and may be extended by another year. It also included a “legal effective solution” to avoid the physical border between Northern Ireland in the UK and Ireland in the EU member states.
