(CNN) - Seventy-two parliamentarians have written to the Duchess of Sussex to express their solidarity against the “obsolete colonial backgrounds” that appear against her and her family in the press.

The parliamentarians, from across the political spectrum, said they support her in "taking a stand against the often unpleasant and misleading nature of the stories printed in several of our national newspapers about you, your character and your family."

The stories and the headlines had sometimes "tried to give opinions about his character, without any good reason as far as we can see," the letter adds.

"Even more worrisome, we are condemning what can only be described as an obsolete colonial background in some of these stories," parliamentarians continued, adding that this could not "be allowed without questioning."

They added that they share "an understanding of abuse and intimidation" used against women in public positions.

Lynch posted the letter on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, writing that parliamentarians from all parties had put aside their differences "to sympathize with the Duchess of Sussex."
