(CNN Spanish) - In Peru, the Judiciary issued 18 months of pretrial detention to 14 of 16 judicial arbitrators accused, by the Prosecutor, of favoring the Odebrecht company in different arbitration awards in which they participated.

Arbitration is an alternative way to resolve conflicts.

The parties agree, previously, to do it through this route instead of going to the Judiciary. Thus, the arbitrators are responsible for deciding among those who are submitted to arbitration.

These lawyers are accused by the prosecution of having committed crimes of bribery, illicit association and money laundering, to favor the Odebrecht company in the arbitrations carried out with the Peruvian State.

Humberto Abanto, lawyer of Jaime Yoshiyama, former secretary general of Keiko Fujimori's party, Popular Force, is one of the former referees against whom preventive detention was issued. Abanto has always denied the charges against him.
