Venice (dpa) - Nearly 70 percent of Venice was flooded on Monday after rising to record levels, days after the city suffered its worst flooding in more than 50 years.
"The gun was destroyed a few days ago and we are talking about $ 1 billion in damage," the city's mayor Luigi Bruniaro said, stressing that this was an emergency and we were dealing with it.
Sirens sounded across Venice in the early hours of the day, warning of the high tide.
On Tuesday, the water level was 187 centimeters, the second highest in Venice's history, while meteorologists predicted the tide would be between 110 centimeters and 120 centimeters at the weekend.
It is noteworthy that in normal cases, the high tide is between 80 and 90 centimeters high but can be dealt with.
