Suspected middleman: Further arrest after murder of journalist in Malta

2019-11-19T15:59:08.447Z

The murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia is still preoccupying Malta's investigators: a suspected middleman claims to know something about the client. Malta's premier offers impunity.

In the case of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was murdered two years ago, the police in Malta have arrested another person. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat confirmed a report from the Times of Malta. Accordingly, the man was arrested in connection with money laundering investigations and stated that he knew something about the reasons for the murder.

Muscat offered the suspect impunity if he worked with the judiciary and provided information that led to the clients. He is said to be a middleman who could have knowledge of the masterminds of the crime.

Caruana Galizia, a blogger critical of the government, was blown up in her car near her home in Bidnija on October 16, 2017 (read more about the case here). She had researched, among other things, corruption in government and businessmen in Malta and their involvement in the scandal surrounding the Panama Papers.

In September, the government ordered a public inquiry. This should be checked whether the murder of the blogger critical of the government could have been prevented. Such an independent investigation of the crime had long been a challenge for Caruana Galizia's family.

So far, there had been ten arrests and three men were subsequently charged. They were said to have built and detonated the explosive device. Anyone who stood behind them as a client is still unknown today.
