(CNN Spanish) - In Nicaragua, complaints about harassment, repression of opponents and the militarization of public spaces persist. According to a report by the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (CENIDH), presented this Friday in Managua, the number of political prisoners in the country is 139. The agency details that “81 of the detainees should have benefited from the Law on Amnesty, but they are still imprisoned. ” In addition, he says that 49 correspond to new catches and the remaining 9 are people who had been released and were recaptured.

The report “This is how Nicaragua resists repression” of the CENIDH includes the events recorded between September and October, and documents evidence of 20 cases of possible torture. The victims offered their testimony where they warn of the existence of clandestine prisons.

The government of President Daniel Ortega has not officially reacted to this report. CNN contacted the Communication and Citizenship Council, which is coordinated by Vice President Rosario Murillo, but there was no response. In official acts, the president maintains the argument that he has been the victim of an attempted coup d'etat financed by the United States.

The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights was one of the civil organizations to which the National Assembly canceled its legal status in December 2018. In addition, the police kept its facilities occupied, on the grounds that they carried out actions contrary to those of their objectives. or supported what they call a coup attempt.
