(CNN Spanish) - The interim government of Bolivia enacted a bill on Sunday to call new elections.

The interim president, Jeanine Áñez, said the law was the result of peaceful civic protests and opened a new page for Bolivia. "We are restoring democracy, through democracy," he said.

"The law that we have just enacted is the law that we Bolivians want and by that law we have taken to the streets and roundabouts to peacefully express our decision to repudiate the way in which the previous government tried to manipulate the will of all of us, therefore, a scandalous fraud, ”he said in an act held at Palacio Quemado, according to the Bolivian state news agency, ABI.

The new law requires the election of new electoral authorities within three weeks. The new Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) will proceed to choose a date for the general elections, which are expected by 2020.

The provisional administration took office after former President Evo Morales resigned on November 10 after mass protests against the alleged electoral fraud in the October 20 presidential elections.

Here are some facts about the law enacted this Sunday, according to ABI:

  • The standard consists of 24 articles and five final provisions.
  • In accordance with the Law of Exceptional and Transitional Regime for the Making of General Elections, the elections made on October 20 are left without legal effect and new elections are held to elect the president.
  • Regarding the election of members of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), the rule states that the Plurinational Legislative Assembly (ALP) will carry out a new election process, in a maximum of up to 20 calendar days, from the approval of regulations.
  • As for the general elections, the members of the TSE, within the two calendar days following their possession, will issue the call for the 2020 general elections.
  • The TSE, through the Civic Registry Service (Sereci), will carry out the sanitation tasks of the electoral roll for said elections.
  • The Law also establishes that all political organizations of national scope with current registration may be involved in the promulgation of the norm.
  • With respect to the candidates, the rule establishes that citizens who have been re-elected continuously, to an elective office, during the two previous constitutional periods, may not run for the same position.
