Washington-SANA

US President Donald Trump has appointed US Ambassador to Norway Admiral Kenneth Braithwaite as the new Navy secretary to succeed Richard Spencer on the back of a case of an elite US officer convicted of abuses in Iraq.

Trump said he was unhappy with the way in which the case of officer Edward Gallagher, who was convicted of abuses in Iraq, was treated, pointing out that he was treated very badly, but nevertheless was fully acquitted of all charges and then regained his rank. He will now retire with all the privileges he deserves.

Trump said Defense Secretary Mark Esper had dismissed Gallagher from his post after the former was charged with war crimes in sensitive cases.
