A medical team at Ibn Al-Nafees Hospital in Damascus succeeded in performing surgery to compensate for the loss of the skull bone of a young man in his third decade. The missing section was manufactured for the first time in Syria with 3D printing technology.

Dr. Issa Awad, head of the neurosurgery department at the hospital, who performed the operation, said that the procedure for compensating the loss of the skull bone is usually done through the restoration of the bone itself if possible or through a manual manufacturing of the waste called “bone cement” or a metal mesh connecting the remaining part. The modern technology used in this process for the first time in Syria and at the Arab level is also a computerized manufacturing and three-dimensional printer for the missing part of the skull bone, which amounts to about forty percent of the area of the skull bone.

The operation lasted three hours yesterday, according to Dr. Awad, who explained that the difficulty of this type of operation lies in lifting the skin from the brain, the absence of bone protects it and separates the layers of the skin and the brain led to large adhesions, explaining that the modern technology contributes to the symmetry of 100 percent in two sections The skull is perfectly matched as well as providing strong protection to the brain.

Patient Fajr Al-Hussein reviewed Ibn Al-Nafees Hospital about a month ago complaining of a large swelling of the head and fluid accumulation in the brain as a result of an accident that led to the loss of part of the skull bone and after conducting the necessary medical investigations and securing the manufacturing of the losses with modern technology. The brain without compensating the loss according to Dr. Awad.

The patient Fajr Hussein expressed his happiness that his health has improved significantly through a smile mixed with tears of joy and will continue according to Dr. Awad medication and physical therapy to improve the symptoms of the right side and the speech aphasia resulting from the accident.

It is noteworthy that the Department of Neurosurgery at Ibn Al-Nafees Hospital is conducting more than 25 surgical operations in addition to a number of ambulatory operations and that the technique of compensating bone loss through the manufacture of three-dimensional printing technology used for the first time in Germany in 2005 has outstanding results, especially in war injuries and accidents .
