Tirana - Sana
Albanian Prime Minister Eddie Rama announced today that the death toll from the strong earthquake that hit the west of the country a few days ago to 51 dead and the search for survivors is over.
The Associated Press quoted Rama as saying the search and rescue operation for survivors of the 6.4-magnitude earthquake in coastal cities had "ended" with 51 dead and 2,000 injured. Preliminary figures showed that more than 1,465 buildings in the capital Tirana and about 900 in the city of Durres were badly damaged.
According to preliminary statistics, the quake resulted in the displacement of 4 thousand people and staying homeless and 2500 were housed in hotels.
Political circles are proposing a new bill that would send all investors, architects and supervisors to jail terms of between 7 and 15 years for violating building codes.
