Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz and the Brandenburg Klara Geywitz have failed in the SPD membership decision on the party presidency. Instead, the former North Rhine-Westphalian Finance Minister Norbert Walter-Borjans and the Member of Parliament Saskia Esken prevailed, as the SPD announced on Saturday.
The duo Esken / Walter-Borjans accounted for just under 53 percent of the votes, Scholz and Geywitz were 45 percent.
In the future, the Social Democrats will be led by a dual leadership that has called into question the continuation of the coalition under Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).
