Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans have prevailed in the membership vote for the new SPD presidency. The party will be led by a double top in the future.

Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz and the Brandenburg Klara Geywitz have failed in the SPD membership decision on the party presidency. Instead, the former North Rhine-Westphalian Finance Minister Norbert Walter-Borjans and the Member of Parliament Saskia Esken prevailed, as the SPD announced on Saturday.

The duo Esken / Walter-Borjans accounted for just under 53 percent of the votes, Scholz and Geywitz were 45 percent.

In the future, the Social Democrats will be led by a dual leadership that has called into question the continuation of the coalition under Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).
