Stricter asylum law: Bamf orders tens of thousands of refugees

2019-12-01T13:14:09.356Z

Since last year, the Bamf controls more intensively the protection status of refugees. One consequence: Twice as many recognized asylum seekers have lost their status as before.

In the first half of this year, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) has ordered around 50,000 refugees for personal interviews. During the same period, the number of refugees who lost their protection status increased sharply. The news agency dpa learned this from the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

In the first ten months of this year, 2.8 percent of the refugees were denied their status. That is more than twice as many as 2018: At that time, the rate was 1.2 percent.

The so-called rule check currently stands for hundreds of thousands of migrants who came to Germany in 2015 and 2016. Three years after recognition of the asylum status, the Bamf must check whether its protection status is still justified.

Previously, no sanctions to fear

Since the entry into force of the tightened asylum legislation about a year ago refugees are obliged to participate in the subsequent review of their protection status. Otherwise, there are penalties, for example in the form of a penalty. Refugees who did not appear at the authorities' hearing to check their reasons for flight and identity did not have to fear any sanctions for doing so.

Furthermore, the law provides that in certain cases the case file can be decided - if the refugees do not comply with the demands of the Bamf. As a rule, the asylum decision should turn out rather negative.

How many refugees have actually violated the obligation to cooperate, can not be read from the numbers. According to the Ministry, this is not statistically recorded in the Bamf.

Comprehensive obligations to cooperate before

Even before its tightening, the asylum law contained extensive obligations to cooperate with refugees. Since last year, these also apply to refugees in revocation and redemption procedures. At the latest three years after being recognized as an asylum seeker, the Bamf has to check in these cases whether the conditions for the protection status still exist - for example, whether there is still a threat situation in the country of origin.

Decisive in the so-called revocation test is above all the development in the country of origin. However, the automatic check should also serve to find out if any indications of false identity information have emerged.
