On the occasion of the International Day of Disability, the Syrian Special Olympics Foundation, in cooperation with Damascus governorate, will launch the first Damascus Marathon for the mentally handicapped on Friday in front of Fayha Sports City in Damascus at 9:00 am.
Dr. Ahmed Nabulsi, Deputy Governor of Damascus, explained during a press conference today that the governorate provided all facilities and provided all means of safety and works to secure all the logistical needs for the success of the marathon, pointing out that this segment can be integrated into the Bakra Elna project and provide training opportunities for them and develop their skills and participate in many activities .
For his part, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Special Olympics Foundation Farid Qotarsh said that the participation of a large number of school students in Damascus with a marathon aimed at integrating people with disabilities into society, pointing out to provide 6 jobs for people with disabilities in the Ministry of Justice and the need to circulate them to be contributing to the nation.
The National Director of the Foundation Talal Bernieh explained that it was proposed to be a marathon for people with special needs mentally in order to differentiate between physical and mental disabilities, stressing that the institution is working to provide all services for them and develop their skills and abilities, scientific and other sports and highlight this segment.
The Director of Physical Education at the Ministry of Education, Dr. Abdul Hamid Al-Zareer confirmed that the Ministry is intensifying its interest in this segment and following up their educational and sporting issues.
It is noteworthy that the countries of the world celebrate on the third of December of each year the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which was adopted by the United Nations since 1992 with the aim of raising awareness of the concept of disability and guaranteeing the rights of persons with disabilities and involving them in various areas of life by building their capacities and qualifying them to be productive persons.
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted by the United Nations in 2006 and signed by Syria in 2007, marked a leap in the way people with disabilities are treated and their cause and rights become part of human rights.
