A state official said on Friday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the issue of Israeli young woman Naama Issachar. During their conversation, Netanyahu expressed his hope for Ishkar's release, sent to Russia for seven and a half years in prison after being caught with cannabis at Moscow's airport. According to the Prime Minister's Office, Netanyahu and Putin spoke on the phone and discussed Iran, the situation in Syria, Israel's security needs and the continued prevention of friction between the IDF and the Russian military.

At the same time, Foreign Minister Israel Katz met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Rome. Katz contacted his Russian colleague about Issachar, expressing hope that Putin would accept the pardon requests he had filed, and sought to increase the frequency of meetings with Issachar to her family.

Netanyahu and Putin's conversation took place after last month's Russian hacker Sergei Lavrov was extradited to the United States, where he was wanted for cyber crimes. Burkov's name was linked to Issachar's name, after Russia also demanded Burkov's extradition to her hands. His extradition was carried out in accordance with the decision of Justice Minister Amir Ohana, and after the High Court rejected his petition.

Russia condemned the High Court decision, which rejected Burkov's petition, and made it clear that the move would not contribute to relations between the states. The Russian Embassy in Israel said "the decision violates its rights as well as Israel's international commitment."

In addition to Burkov, Issachar's family also petitioned to prevent the extradition, but her mother later announced that the family had sought to delete the petition. Issachar, 26, was arrested last April at Sharmiitbo Airport on his way back to India from India for 9.6 grams of cannabis found in his backpack.
