(CNN Spanish) - At the opening of the Regional Forum of the Central American Integration System (SICA) 2019, the Vice President of El Salvador, Félix Ulloa, called for more power for the Central American Parliament, which since the 80's was established as a political body and an SICA consultative that only offers “recommendations” on the topics it addresses.

Ulloa, who opened the event on behalf of President Nayib Bukele, demands that the entity have more power, that its decisions are binding and that it can issue laws. The official requested that the Central American Parliament be a representative body of the region because "Central America needs to make the leap to form that community." Ulloa added that the region needs to "engage in" a block dialogue with world powers such as the United States, China and the European Union, among others.

In that sense, the secretary general of SICA, Vinicio Cerezo, confirmed that the economy of Central America is the fourth in Latin America, behind Brazil, Mexico and Colombia.

SICA was founded in 1991 and is made up of the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Panama.

The Central American Parliament is a political organ of SICA with functions of approach, analysis and recommendation; democratically legitimized because their representatives are freely elected by universal suffrage in all member countries.
