Washington (CNN) - Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders apologized Thursday to former Vice President Joe Biden after mocking a moment in the debate in which Biden, who has been open about overcoming stuttering, seemed to imitate A stuttering child to convey how he connects to people.
Sanders' apology came after she tweeted: "I, I, I, I have absolutely no idea what Biden is talking about," which prompted the former vice president to tweet: "I have worked all my life to overcome a stutter. And it is a great honor for me to mentor children who have experienced the same. It is called empathy. Search it".
"I really didn't know that about you and it's admirable," Sanders said in response. "I apologize and should have given my opinion with respect."
Sanders deleted the original tweet.

Biden has been open for a long time on how he overcame his stuttering and became a good public speaker. He told The Atlantic in a recent profile that his verbal setbacks were "the best thing that ever happened to him."
"Stuttering gave me an idea that I think I would have never had about other people's pain," he told the magazine.
When asked if he was worried that President Donald Trump would make fun of his stuttering if he became the Democratic candidate, Biden added: "I don't think so."
“If you ask in the polls, 'Do you stutter? Have you ever stuttered? ', 80 to 95% of people say no, ”said Biden, stating that if Trump attacked his verbal mistakes,“ I will expose him for what he is. ”
In an appearance in 2010 on ABC's The View, Biden said he stood in front of the mirror and declared poetry to help develop the rhythm. Later, in college, he said he took classes to speak in public.
The former vice president entered the debate on Thursday while maintaining leadership in the race for the Democratic nomination with the support of 26% of registered voters who are Democrats or independents with a Democratic tendency, according to a new CNN poll.
