It's hard to miss the irony: Peter Weind, a 33-year-old man who was probably under the influence, torched the student residences at a New York University meeting last Friday with matches set to light the Chanukah candles.
Around 4 a.m., firefighters were called to the building after a fire broke out on the first floor of the institution while students slept in their beds. They quickly extinguished the fire and feared there were no students affected.

Just hours after the unusual incident, Wind was caught. In the security cameras, he was seen kicking the glass door and entering the complex, and he was charged with arson, criminal intent burglary, obtaining a border and "criminal mischief".
Firefighting Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said he set fire to three fires in total, using matches intended to light the Chanukah candles. Weind is suspected to have been under the influence of drugs when he committed the act. So far, the incident has not been defined as a hate crime, but at the same time the commissioner has made it clear that "attacking any religious institution is a serious offense. We have zero tolerance for arson in this city."
